Celebrities - Which planet are they from?

After a long day of chairing interviews for a senior director at the Town Hall, I sat down in the evening to eat my chicken saag masala, while flicking through Grazia magazine.
Front page feature on Amy Winehouse, and as a big fan of hers was pleased to read she seems to be overcoming her addiction problems, and peforming well.
I got to a page on Courtney Cox Arquette. She is the dark haired Monica from Friends.
Apparently her friends are worried about her health as she's lost weight, and her life has been 'blighted by ....problems and lukewarm professional success'
Now I don't like to see any woman suffer, or be blighted, but in a totally vacuous article (Yes, I read it) we learn that she's having a bit of a mid life crisis (she's 43) and her career has stalled. But help is at hand because her close friend from Friends, Jennifer Anniston, has rallied to her side (with me so far?), and plans to wisk her off on a trip to an exclusve Mexican spa to help Courtney get healthy again. Jen has also sent round a chef to 'encourage Courtney to start eating better and more regularly'
Well, thank goodness for that!
In the scheme of things this is clearly a big celebrity story. Not quite in the Britney league, and rather more important than the feature on Posh's bunions. But 3 pages on someone who's lost a bit of weight and is a having a mid life crisis?
This is light years away from the women I meet and talk to most days in my ward. Women who are struggling to bring up their kids on a council estate, whilst ensuring they can pay their bills, and keep their boys away from gangs on their doorstep. Real women and strong women.
It seems our appetite for reading any old detail about a so-called celebrities sells magazines.
But excuse me for throwing away a magazine that manages to portray a succesful millionaire actress as someone who deserves our sympathy, because she's lost a little weight.
The world of celebrity is getting further and further away from reality and into the realms of fantasy. They all need to get out more, out of their mansions and see how their sisters on the other side of town are living. That way I just know they will go back and be thankful for what they've got. Rant over!
